Chasing Bohemia Powder
I have been following Mount Bohemia weather the past few weeks. Notice they were still in Lake Effect snow for the next week, looking on New Years Day. Asked my best buddy Matt if he wanted to take a last minute trip up there for some fun in the POW.
He took a half on Friday and we hit the road as soon as he got to my place. I was finishing my work day on the road, which is awesome I'm able to do that. Got up there around 22:00-23:00 their time as the snow was falling. Our plan was to get a motel on Friday, but said screw it and just slept in the back of my Jeep. Thankfully, he is the same height as me so we both fit perfectly in the back! We had to double sleeping bag it since it was -3 Friday night.
Woke up Saturday to a healthy dumping of fresh snow and a view of the slopes, we parked/camped in their parking lot. Hit the slopes all day! Just some amazing skiing and conditions all day. After a fun ass day, we headed up to Copper Harbor to Brickside Brewery to have a pint, waste some time, and grab a growler. Headed back to Mount Bohamia, planning to sleep in the parking lot again, but first we went into the commons area to make dinner. Hungout and played some Wii with a few other guys, before walking back to the Jeep for night two.
Night two, was awesome sleeping! Maybe because we had our layout and systems dialed in from the night prior. It was also a bit warmer, both pretty tired, maybe a bit buzzed up lol, but we slept super well. Again, woke up to more snow! Heck it even snowed inside of the Jeep, cracking the windows is a must when sleeping in the back. Made some tasty coffee with Phat Fudge (of course) before hitting the slopes for 4-5 hours of fun. Main lift shut down, due to mechanical issues, but didn't stop us from getting in a bunch of runs on the far side.
Wrapped up skiing around 13:30-14:00, before hitting the long drive home. Ya know the 6-7 hour drive after a full day of skiing is always a fun one, but that's what makes these trips possible. No local mountains in MN and Mount Bohemia is the best skiing in the midwest, period! That's if you like ungroomed tree skiing down single, double, and triple black diamonds, which we do. Was awesome to kick the ski season off with a great last minute trip. We will be back up there in a few week with the rest of the group. Given I am still watching their weather for another powder window last minute trip :)
Not many photos because I didn't take out my good camera and the GoPro was not wanting to corporate at all, but we still got a few shots. This trip was more about ripping up the slopes!
