My Love for Music

March 15, 2017

I got to say I LOVE music. I have Bose earbuds in all day every day. Heck I even sleep with them camping if I cannot sleep. To me music come from ones sole and feeds others. With unlimited genres to pick from there is something for everyone. I myself do not compose any music of my own. Some are born to be singers, songwriters, guitarist, drummer, pianist, and so on. Me well not so much. I am sure with time and practice I could get better but I have so many other things going on all the time I just never put in the time to fully learn, maybe down the road I will pick up an instrument again. Until then I will leave it to the professionals and up and coming.

I know artist put in long ass hours, countless takes, and trials to get their song/album completed. I've seen the process a number of times in person. Just to get little to nothing back from the end user. Illegally downloading and streaming has destroyed this industry, which I am not going to go into details since it gets messy quick. Artist are typically making most of their money from live shows, with a small chunk coming from album sales, and merchandise today. But not so much with digital albums compared to hard albums. You know CDs? Ha if you said no I would not be surprised, dead technology. How about vinyl? Ok vinyls are making a comeback but still not a ton of money is generated. This is why I’m huge about buying my music directly from the artist I love and enjoy along with attending concerts, when I can. I want to make sure they get everything they truly earned. Yeah it might be millions but that just shows how much of an impact an artist can have. If you don’t think they earn that, well I would like to see you do better, and don’t buy the album. But you best not illegally download their music!

Anyways, back in the day I was able to utilize artist music into my short skateboarding or skiing films without worrying someone was going to be knocking at my door. I was using them in personal films, which I generated no income, followers, or anything. Just the enjoyment from friends and family. Of course, I called out the artist at the end of each film because they deserve the credit for their work. I am just utilizing it to provide better flow in my films and I actually edit based on the music, that is how much it means to me. The music makes the edit and flow of the films.

However, today everything is totally different. To many greedy sons of bitches out there ripping people off for their own gain and not giving credit where it is due… Now of days, it seems like people are constantly trying to rip each other off, even love ones! So the days of me using music in my edits that I love and listen too daily is a thing of the past…. This is because I don’t own the right to use the music. This totally sucks because I have to jump through all the hoops to get the rights or I do it illegally and hope I don’t get dinged… Both are not something I really want to do. So now I am stuck using the free music that is out there. Given I might be able to find some stuff I like and it will work, but it is just not the same to me.

Nevertheless, this is still something I want to make sure I am respecting the rules and laws out there. So sadly, no more music I own in my work like The Naked and Famous, The Black Keys, and others like that, unless I get the “Ok” from them to use it. Not really something I am going to do for my short edits and stuff, but maybe for bigger projects I will reach out to them and see. Until then, I will see what I can find with the free stuff YouTube allows and who knows maybe discover some new awesome artist!

If ya know any good bands that are willing to let me use their music let me know! Of course, they will get tagged and promoted when used :)
